5 things you can do instead of making new year's resolutions!

We've ALL been there. We get excited for the new year. We feel like something magical is going to happen on January 1 and all of a sudden, we'll all be consistent at the gym, we'll magically get that new job we've wanted, our relationships will all the sudden be perfect!

After more than 40 years around the sun, I can tell you there is no magic... no fairy dust sprinkled on January 1, nor is there some type of reset button!

I've also learned that things won't change unless you do! So, instead of writing another set of resolutions which you'll forget by June, here are some alternatives:

  1. Think through the moments that made you happy in the current year and plan to repeat or recreate those moments next year

  2. Take care of yourself - rest, relax, reflect before heading into the new year. I like to take some time to read a great book, watch good movies and just ease into the new year

  3. Make a list of the family and friends that you didn't get enough time with this year and either call them or make plans to grab brunch or go see those friends

  4. What new hobbies or passions do you want to pursue? Maybe you love painting or photography, find a class and go!

  5. Develop monthly themes - maybe in January, the theme is self care. Make a plan of the things you want to do this month that will meet that theme. Maybe in February it's financial literacy - take this time to learn about something that will bring in an additional stream of income... and so on...

The truth is, when we have a goals-first mentality, we delay our happiness until that goal is achieved. Or, we come to a place where once that goal is achieved we are already focused on the next goal with out celebrating our wins! Let's be kinder and gentler with ourselves as we focus on the pathway to perceived success vs. just holding out joy until that success is obtained.

Happy New Year!

I wish you peace, happiness and joy!

XO,

Ayanna
