I fell out of love with my home

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

In my time at home during quarantine I’ve realized, I let my house “go.”

its similar to a marriage. When the marriage is shiny and new, everything is fun and beautiful and fresh. Waking up in the morning to the smiling face of the one you love so deeply gives you that extra boost to get through out the day. So much so, you rush home after work just to see that special person again.... But then, after you’ve been married for 7, 10, 20 years, things are not so new anymore. It’s the same old same old. No waking up smiling, no rushing home, no extra boost. That’s when you know it’s time to spice it up.

That’s EXACTLY the space I am in with my house!! Hubby and I have lived in our home now almost 10 years. When we first moved in, it was just the two of us. We moved from a 2-bedroom apartment in the city to a 4 bedroom home and it was a TON of space for us. Then baby number 1 came along with all his stuff. Then baby number 2 came and we added more stuff. Now, when I look around, I don’t even recognize this house. Sometimes I am like, who lives here??? There is no space for anything, the boys stuff is everywhere and I am losing the love I once had for my home.

So now, it’s time to spice it up!

First order of business is organization! I read a quote recently that said something to the effect of - if your house is a mess it’s because everything doesn‘t have a home. LIGHT BULB💡! I always tell my kids to put things in their “place.” However, what I realized is that my idea of put things in their place was the equivalent to renting an apartment. It wasn’t a permanent spot that made sense, so it worked temporarily. But the notion that everything needs a “home“ has totally changed my perspective and I hope it works for my family (and my sanity).

This past week, I went on a spree at the Container Store to find some homes for all our stuff. I had to contain myself while walking through the aisles. I literally wanted to get a bin, basket, or container for EVERYTHING. Instead, I decided to start with the spaces that are heavy traffic for my family. The bedrooms, linen closet, bathroom and.... my make up vanity 😂 (had to do something for myself).

I’ll be spending the week on an organizing frenzy so I’ll keep you all posted but here are some of the products I purchased:

Elfa Start A Stack - these I am going to use in the boys’ closet. These kids are running out of storage space with all the darn basketball uniforms and clothes they have. So this will be their special storage for the overflow of athletic gear.

I also purchased several items from their Luxe Acrylic Modular Make Up System. Ya know a girl loves her makeup... but it was starting get a little messy on my vanity. This is going to be game changing! What I love about this system is that you can create your own organization set up based on your needs. The pieces are super versatile and allow you to be creative in how you display and store your make up.

I made my way over to the aisle with the baskets and went a little crazy! LOL. I bought baskets in multiple sizes to help organize my linen closet. Water Hyacinth Storage Bins with Handles have become storage for hair products, medicines and first aid, as well as cleaning products under the sink in the bathroom!

There are SO many amazing items there and as I started to put things away, I felt my happy come back. That old spark that I had at the beginning is coming back.

What are you doing to reignite the love for your living space now that we're spending more time at home?

XO,

Ayanna
